Kovalam`s other side
Not only does Kovalam offer the most beautiful beaches in India, it is also a popular meet-up among tourists. |
Just south of Trivandrum you can find pretty bays with white sand beaches lined with palm trees or rocky shores.
The conditions for surfing are given almost all year round. Swimmers (and non-swimmers) can enjoy the presence of life guards at the beach.
Also Kovalam offers a manyfold of ayurvedic massages and treatments. Recently the business with medical tourism is booming as well. Western orientated dental clinics and eye care centers spring up like mushrooms.|
Most restaurants serve Indian and international dishes with a beautiful sea view. For those who like it more quiet, you can find restaurants, hotels, and resorts a bit off the beach in the cooling shades of the coconut palm groves. Many visitors who just want to relax a short time after an exhausting trip through India, tend to stay much longer than intended.
Apart tourism which is concentrated on the two small bays, the people's everyday business revolves around the harvest of coconuts, bananas, papayas and all kinds of vegetables. Early in the morning the fishermen take out their small boats to pull in their nets manually by noon.
One side of Kovalam is the tourism, the grand hotel palaces and the like. Another reality lies beneath, hidden to the unobservant tourists: |
